Moderation, Resolutions and Failure To Comply

Most religions agree that all things should be used in moderation, aside from the religion itself. Ironic. Probably why I'm closer to renouncing religion than not. In any case, I feel one of the most valid applications of this principle is with sugar and food consumption. I'll admit some particularly sensitive stuff in this post, so you are warned.

I'm a foodie. Yes, a foodie. Funny to hear that coming from a vegetarian, which slightly limits the food I can judge, but at least I know I won't get trichinosis or salmonella. Also, this way I don't have to encounter weird stuff like slugs with fish eggs. Acquired taste, HA! Only because some people are dumb enough to keep eating it until they've convinced themselves they ENJOY it!

But I shouldn't really say that, as I've slowly acquired a taste for braised tofu. Not really a taste, but more of a texture. Or lack of. Or just preference for mush. At least if I lose all my teeth I'll still get my protein.... Hahaha.

Aside from my aside, because I never make any new years' resolutions, I decided to make one this year, and depressingly, I broke it before I even resolved to do it, and then promptly after I made it, this being to moderate my obsessive sugar intake. While I've done it before for almost a year, I haven't managed to harness it yet. I believe sunshine will help with that. If it ever comes back. What's the point of it expanding and engulfing our planet if it won't even keep us warm now? Ha.....

Because of my broken resolutions, I've become motivated to.... Well, nothing in particular. I've dropped most motivation to anything besdides physical appearance and talent. Cards are grouped with talent, right?

I've almost devoted myself to getting more sleep, but so far I haven't been able to fully commit. But I'm still a good person, fret not.

Seeing as my mind totally blanked [probably from lack of sleep; I'm still on vacation sleep schedule, which is probably why it stinks so much dragging my sorry carcass out of bed at 6:30 am], I suppose I'll peace out and leave you to your lives again. Cheers! :D

  1. About the sweet tooth: If you take in between 0.8 to 1.5 grams of protein per kilogram body mass (2.2 lbs per kg) then it ought to help curb it.

    If you don't eat meat, which is a highly concentrated form of protein, then you will have to make a concerted effort to get enough until it becomes a habit. I would suggest making the calculations as to how much you should be taking in and then count your grams as you go through the day.

    If you still eat eggs and milk products, then it should still be fairly easy to get sufficient protein. Cottage cheese is probably one of the best sources because you don't have to eat much to get a lot (e.g., about 13 grams protein per half cup). An inexpensive whey protein is often one of the least expensive (i.e., cost per gram protein) forms of protein available.

    But if you are truly vegan, then you're going to have to make sure you are taking in at least 1.5 grams protein per kilogram body mass because plant proteins aren't as digestible as animal derived proteins. Therefore, if the label says 7 grams of protein per serving for the plant food you're about to eat, you can count on only digesting and absorbing a percentage (up to about 78%) of the listed protein.

    Actually, if it's a religion worth its weight, it should not merely push strict moderation. Rather, it should promote abstinence from those things that bring harm, moderation in those things that are not harmful in moderation, and zealousness in those things that require absolute commitment. I once wrote about this idea in one of my blog posts. Such an approach requires wisdom. That last word should sound familiar to you, especially regarding dietary matters.

    Thus, as for extreme measures, completely renouncing religion is not moderation at all. Rather it is an extreme course in life which has far reaching implications. Choose wisely.

  2. There's a typo in my last comment. I should have said that if you're truly vegan, you should use the range of 1.5 to 2.2 grams of protein per kilogram body mass per day.

    Don't worry about breaking your resolutions, it happens to everyone. It's happened to me so many times already in these past few days that I would have been better off not making resolutions, then I wouldn't be tempted to break them and therefore would end up doing everything I'm telling myself not to do far less often. *inhale*

    Okay, so I read the comment you left me, and I think that if you lived where I lived or I lived where you lived, we'd pretty much be best friends. Cause it seems that we agree on just about everything. Anywho, that's all. =)

  4. Ok, one more small correction on my first comment. At some point I'll get it all right. The protein gram value listed on a nutrition label does reflect an adjustment made due to differing digestibilities. But what that means is that to get the same amount of protein from plants as you would from animal sources, you have to eat more calories.

  5. Truly- ALL things in moderation-especially decisions that have far greater consequences than whether you eat tofu or sugar. Decisions made on spur of the moment or without" true rational thinking" will change your life forever, be careful "renouncing religion" until you have truly studied, pondered and prayed about it. Fake things in the world will fade away as you mature, choose your friends wisely, they can have huge influence on you to change who you really are. Isn't young love wonderful? Word of caution- Be very careful. ps- don't be so conceited and stuck on "you"- people notice that, but they are more likely to notice those who are beautiful but don't declare it from their own lips. The world is way to focused on "ME", lose yourself in doing good for others.
